Menstrual cycle and mental wellbeing

This webinar introduces the physical and emotional difficulties that may be experienced across the menstrual cycle and presents different tools that can be used to improve emotional wellbeing during menstruation.

The menstrual cycle is a natural process that occurs from the rise and fall of different hormones across the month. The hormonal fluctuations that occur during the menstrual cycle can lead to a range of physical and emotional changes. Some may find these changes manageable, but others may notice that they impact considerably on their wellbeing and day-to-day life. Cognitive behavioural techniques can help people that menstruate navigate the emotional and physical changes they might experience during their menstrual cycle.

Key topics covered:

  • Menstrual cycle explained: A brief explanation of what happens in the body during the menstrual cycle, including hormonal changes and their associated impact on the body and cognitive functioning.
  • A Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) view of the Menstrual Cycle: An explanation of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and the effect that the perception of physical symptoms can have on emotional and physical wellbeing.
  • Cognitive and behavioural tools and techniques: Tools to challenge negative thoughts associated with the menstrual cycle, including thoughts of harm to self; as well as behavioural techniques to improve emotional wellbeing and manage physical and emotional symptoms.
  • Top tips: Tips of preparing for the menstrual cycle, tips on exercise, nutrition, acceptance and self-compassion.
