Living well with persistent pain

This webinar introduces the relationship between physical and mental health and provides self-help tools that can help with pain management and emotional wellbeing.

The ‘Living well with persistent pain’ webinar introduces the difference between acute and persistent pain, as well as the physical and mental aspects of self-managing persistent pain. The webinar also covers the relationship between physical and mental health and provides tools based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy that can help with pain management and improve emotional wellbeing. The webinar includes information about how to access further support offered by NHS Hertfordshire and Mid Essex Talking Therapies services.

  • Acute versus persistent pain: An introduction of the difference between acute and persistent pain.
  • Self-management of persistent pain: An introduction to the physical and mental aspects of the self-management of persistent pain, including an overview of diet, exercise, and pain. 
  • The link between physical and mental health: An introduction to the relationship between physical and mental health and how they can influence each other.
  • Inactivity and Boom-and-bust cycles: An introduction to the cycle of inactivity and the boom-and-bust cycle. These cycles explain how unhelpful changes in daily activities can impact overall mood and lead to a decline in activities over time.
  • Energy management: An introduction to what is energy management, its benefits, and steps to managing your energy.
  • Goal setting: An introduction to SMART goals, how to create SMART goals, and an example of using a record to achieve a goal. 
  • Passengers on the bus: An experiential exercise to help identify how you react to thoughts, memories, emotions, and physical sensations. The metaphor provides a helpful way to acknowledge these experiences to improve emotional wellbeing.
  • How to access further support: Further information on how to access immediate support during a crisis and how to self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies services.
